Glass Slide

A glass slide (microscope slide) is a thin, flat piece of glass used to hold specimens for examination under a microscope.

Uses of glass slides in medical practice

1. Microscopic examination

   • Used to mount patient specimens such as blood, urine, sputum, and tissue for microscopic examination.

2. Blood examination

   • Preparation of peripheral blood smears to examine red blood cells, white blood cells, and blood parasites such as Plasmodium.

3. Urine examination

   • Urinary sediment can be placed on a slide to look for RBCs, WBCs, epithelial cells, casts, crystals, and microorganisms.

4. Microbiology

   • Used for preparing bacterial and fungal smears for Gram staining, acid-fast staining, and other microscopic tests.

5. Cytology

   • Used to spread cells obtained from body fluids or fine-needle aspiration for examination, including Pap smears for cervical cytology.

6. Histopathology

   • Thin sections of tissue are mounted on glass slides, stained, and examined to diagnose diseases such as cancer and inflammatory conditions.

7. Parasitology

   • Used to examine specimens for intestinal parasites, ova, cysts, and protozoa.
