Measuring tape

An easuring tape (measuring tape) is used in clinical practice to take accurate body and wound measurements.

Common clinical uses

• Measuring height and body dimensions

• Measuring head circumference, especially in infants and children

• Measuring chest circumference

• Measuring abdominal circumference, e.g., in ascites or pregnancy

• Measuring limb circumference to assess edema, muscle wasting, or swelling

• Measuring wound size — length, width, and sometimes circumference

• Monitoring growth and nutritional status

• Measuring waist and hip circumference for assessment of body fat distribution

• Monitoring changes over time, such as reduction in edema or wound healing

In medical school practical examinations, you may be asked to demonstrate head circumference, chest circumference, abdominal circumference, or limb circumference measurement using a measuring tape.
